If you monetize content in the UAE, a new media law could directly affect how you work and how much you could be fined.
Whether you’re a journalist, content creator, influencer, or media company, you now need a license to operate legally in the UAE.
Effective May 29, 2025, the UAE introduced a new media regulation under Federal Decree Law No. 55 of 2023. It requires two mandatory licenses:
A business license from your emirate or free zone (like Dubai Media City or twofour54), and a media license from the UAE Media Council.
But that’s not all. The law also enforces 20 strict content standards that apply to everything you publish: videos, posts, articles, podcasts, and ads. These rules aim to protect national identity, public order, and cultural values. Violating them can result in fines ranging from AED 10,000 to AED 1,000,000, suspension of your license, or even legal action.
So how do you stay compliant
✅ Get the required licenses before posting monetized content
✅ Ensure all your content respects UAE’s legal and cultural boundaries
✅ Clearly label any paid or sponsored partnerships
✅ Avoid content that could be seen as offensive, misleading, or politically sensitive
✅ Work with a legal expert to review your media strategy, campaigns, and contracts
